What are the key trends for autumn?
We have followed the trend for volume,
which was important at Yves Saint Laurent,
J Lindeberg, Jil Sander and Raf Simons.
High-shine patent and metallics, such as
that at D&G, Moncler, Dolce & Gabbana
and Jil Sander, are also significant, while
the return to luxe was everywhere.
What are your best sellers? We are
finding that the items with the higher price
points are selling the best, surprisingly,
such as a £6,000 coat from Roberto
Cavalli, a £3,000 shearling coat from
Dolce & Gabbana (which has sold out)
and a £3,000 Giorgio Armani jacket. The
stronger, more exaggerated shoulder line,
as was shown by Alexander McQueen
and Brioni, has sold brilliantly and it
really suits the British man’s shape. In
accessories, anything with a high shine or
patent is doing really good business. Any
of the real statement pieces have also done

well for us – for example, we have sold out
of Prada’s shagpile knits and its graduated
ombre-effect patent bags.
Which is your favourite designer or
brand at the moment? Tom Ford,
which is new for us from the coming
spring and will remain exclusive to Harrods
in the UK for four seasons. I also like the
collections from Brioni, Dolce & Gabbana,
D&G, Etro and Paul Smith.
Who is the new name to watch? Michael
Bastian, who has also just been made the
new creative director at Bill Blass and Tim
Hamilton, both of which are US designers.
Elsewhere, Barker Black is making some of
the best shoes around.
What is autumn’s must-have item?
A military pea coat. Richard James and
Dolce & Gabbana have done great ones
and I also loved Vivienne Westwood and
Balenciaga’s take on it. An alternative
option would be Paul Smith’s longer-length
Russian-inspired military coat.
What is the key accessory of the
season? The ombre-effect patent
bag by Prada, or a pair of high-shine
patent shoes, which are best from Dolce
& Gabbana, Gucci, Salvatore Ferragamo
and Kurt Geiger.
What items should we invest in? A good
quality two-button suit, a velvet jacket with
peaked lapels (you can wear that with jeans
or dress it up to be more formal with a tie)
or the peaked-lapel cashmere/wool mix
coat by Dolce & Gabbana.
