flaming
finale
The Burning Man
annual bonfire goes
up four days early
Glastonbury is often cited as the
world’s finest festival, but Somerset’s
music gathering has nothing to
match the scale of Burning Man. This
“annual experiment in temporary
community” began with 20 friends
on a San Francisco beach in 1986 and
now attracts up to 50,000 people to
Black Rock Desert, Nevada.
It focuses on 10 principles,
apparently, including community
spirit, decommodification, radical
self-expression and participation…
but, much more excitingly, the festival’s
finale results in a wooden figure named
‘The Man’ being incinerated. It all
smacks of the brilliant 1973 film (and
woeful 2007 remake) The Wicker Man,
but the organisers are adamant that
there are no pagan rituals or naked
Britt Eklands attached to the event.
This year the organic sculpture
was a heady 40ft high, yet its stature
was diminished slightly when a sneaky
San Franciscan, Paul Addis, set fire
to it four days ahead of schedule
during a full lunar eclipse. Fellow
festival-goers rebuilt it in time to set
it alight again on the official date of
1 September. Visit burningman.com
for more details.
