Cold War plane transforms into luxury hotel
Western decadence winds
its way into Eastern Bloc relic
when the world divides along
ideological lines, you expect
decade-long stand-offs,
taciturn conventions and poorly
veiled verbal stabs. what you
don’t expect is a luxury hotel,
but surprisingly, some dutch
folk have converted an east
German cold war aeroplane
into just that.
the plane, a 40-metre long
ilyushin iL-18, was built in 1960
and began life as a government
transporter for the German
democratic republic. it carried
east Germany’s top dogs,
before east German airline

destinations such as cuba,
russia, china and Vietnam.
now, however, all traces of
the iron curtain austerity have
gone, replaced with the kind of
decadence that will have Lenin
turning in his tomb. this
extravagant suite for two,
which takes up the whole plane,
includes a jacuzzi, infrared
sauna, three flatscreen
televisions, a Blu-ray player
and, of course, a 24/7
flight attendant.

the only downside of it being
a plane is that it has to be in
an airport; teuge in the
netherlands, to be precise.
however, to make up for the
view, you can take a helicopter
tour or a parachute jump. if you
fancy a stay in the suite, it’ll cost
you £300 a night.
