ARCHITECTURE
Home cinema reaches Californian heights
Architect hooks up projector to side of his house
his is the home of Hagy
Belzberg, Harvard graduate
and one time protégé of Frank
Gehry – the architect behind the
Bilbao Guggenheim.
The plot on the LA hills supports two
buildings, both of which are stunning
examples of modern design principles,
created by Belzberg’s architecture
practice. The upper floor is glazed on
every side, with an infinity pool close
by overlooking the city. But the real
dealbreaker is found on the exterior
wall of the guest house, where a
projector on the terrace transforms
the wall into a cinema screen.
“On the 4 July, we hooked up the
PlayStation and played Guitar Hero until
T
2am,” says designer Chris Arntzen.
And unusually, with activity of that
sort, neighbours weren’t a problem.
“The house is at the top of Skyline Drive
so the noise tends to stick up there,” he
said. And of course, with California’s
toasty climate, playing air guitar on the
patio is a perfectly legitimate thing to do.
